The Self-Century in a Nutshell

All in all, the focus of the series seems to be on the various ways of human manipulation. It is shown that to make a person do a certain activity, you must be able to make the person “feel good,” make him or her think that he or she is going to accomplish something that he or she has been longing to. With enough skill, one can virtually make a normal person jump off a cliff by making him or her believe that he or she would fly, or gain eternal salvation, obtain powers, and numerous other “reasons”. This has become one of marketing’s decent propaganda.

Another way to manipulate people, according to the series, is through tapping into the subconscious minds of people. Upon doing so, the subject might reach a state of irrational and instinctual barbarism. A concrete example would be on how Hitler made people think that sweeping a whole population of Jews would make the world a better place. Furthermore, democratic “leaders” believe that they were doing such things to assert democracy.

Politicians have made pretty good use for this, as it’d vastly boost their ranking. I already imagine that during a campaign, one runner might spread that if he would win, this and that would be implemented, good projects will be executed, everything positive and whatnot. They’d use all the fancy-sounding words that can pretty much be explained in simpler ways one can think of.

Lastly, or at least at the end of my writing capacity, is that there was once this group of therapist whose goal was to create non-conformist people. While this’d sound like it will greatly improve the development of democracy, I for one think that this has a good chance, probably around 70%, that it will lead to anarchy. This, again, was taken advantage by the same guys who found out that they can profit from peoples’ desires to satisfy their weird desires. It might be something like people selling stuff to others and claiming that the product they’re selling makes them more in control, better thinking, and some other possible false claims.

The Beginning of a New Challenge

It is not easy to get used to something and have it suddenly changed. This is what I had to face in the beginning of one of my classes, sociology to be exact. Compared to my past classes, where I wasn’t really required to contribute to the class (mainly because of having most classes as math, science and technology, where it is mostly objective in terms of information), sociology got me at a tight spot. I could say that this subject held me on the throat. I was terrified by the mere thought of having to participate in class. I have a pretty severe case of stage fright, and trying to stick to one language per statement doesn’t help to relieve me of my social misery. It felt like standing on stage in front of a multitude of people. I didn’t really like speaking that much; I usually talk only to say things that are necessary.

Now, with all these personal weaknesses aside, I actually found the participation requirement to be a good thing. Of all the subjects I’ve taken, from childhood ‘til my first year here in college, I realized that I was given too little opportunity to express myself, which might be the reason I’m a quiet person after all. Upon stumbling onto this thought, I become thankful that my instructor imposed class participation as the major requirement for his course.

Just as I thought things couldn’t get any more outrageous as compared to my past classroom experiences, he suddenly gave us the freedom to change the syllabus of the course – any component at all except for the range of grades– which probably shouldn’t be tampered with anyways. After checking the percentages of each requirement, I found it fair enough, but the instructor thought most of us didn’t care. I also noticed the excess points (the total was over 100%, 105% to be exact), but one of my classmates beat me to it, and then it seems stupid to repeat it, so I didn’t bother.

It was also quite noticeable that he keeps reiterating that we should speak out our minds. Probably, that was one of the things I won’t forget about my instructor. Another thing about the instructor is that upon his arrival, the atmosphere changes from boring to somehow tense and exciting, which I, a silent person, would find rather invigorating.

This instructor has somehow made me realize the sociological essence of having a sociology class. Overall, I think this will be one heck of a roller coaster ride, and I’m always ready for a thrill of a lifetime.
